For pet food manufacturers, the selection of appropriate packaging materials is essential to ensure the shelf life of the product. Therefore, strict quality control of packaging materials and packaging is required.

As we all know, the breeding of microorganisms requires a certain environment, of which the three most important factors are ambient temperature, oxygen and moisture. Oxygen is the main external cause of rancidity. The less oxygen content, the smaller the possibility of rancidity. Water can provide active environment for microorganisms, accelerate the hydrolysis of fat and shorten the shelf life of food. During the shelf life, the oxygen and moisture content of the package is more dependent on the integrity and barrier properties of the pet food package.

Therefore, the quality control of pet packaging is mainly controlled from two aspects: the barrier property of the material and the integrity of the packaging.

During shelf life, the oxygen and moisture in the complete pet food package mainly comes from the oxygen and water vapor permeating through the package. Barrier properties refer to the effect of the packaging material on the permeation of gas or liquid molecules through the material. Labthink Lan Guang selected seven kinds of pet food packaging materials PET, PET CPP, BOPP/CPP, BOPET/PE, OPP/PE/CPP, BOPET/VMPET/LDPE and aluminum-plastic composite films, and tested, analyzed and compared their oxygen and water vapor transmission rates respectively. The greater the oxygen transmission rate, the worse the oxygen resistance of the material; the greater the water vapor transmission rate, the worse the moisture resistance of the material.
